The Yamaha TransAcoustic U1TA2 Upright Piano functions as a high-quality acoustic upright piano in its own right, having been based on the industry-standard Yamaha U1 upright piano.

What really makes the U1TA2 special, however, is that it possess Yamaha’s SILENT piano™ Technology.  By simply fixing the middle pedal down, you can listen solely through headphones, physically turning down the volume of the piano.  The hammer stop bar prevents the hammers from hitting the strings, and the sound that you hear becomes a beautifully sampled Yamaha CFX concert grand. Select from the 19 built-in instrument voices, including grand and electric pianos, harpsichord, organs and strings, or plug in an external tone generator.  Furthermore, the TransAcoustic range allows you to choose between playing using only digital tones, purely acoustic sounds, or any combination of the two.  Sounds played through speakers often sound confined due to the size of the speaker itself, but Yamaha’s TransAcoustic system turns the whole piano into that loudspeaker, thus generating a much larger and richer sound.

The Yamaha TransAcoustic U1TA2 Upright Piano also features a simple MIDI song recorder that includes a metronome that you can adapt to any time signature, as well as song storage/playback via a connected USB drive. Note that the U1TA2 is not a Disklavier piano, so MIDI songs will play only the digital sounds as opposed to triggering the real piano action.  The U1TA2 also features a USB audio recorder, allowing you to record your performances, and is also iPad compatible.  Finally, not only can the U1TA2 pass along external audio (from a 1/8″ stereo input) to the soundboard, but it can fine-tune that audio up to a half-step in either direction. Do tracks you’d like to play along with from your iPod sound a bit sharp or flat relative to the piano? Not a problem.
