The Cavendish Classic is a British Thoroughbred. Traditionally crafted in The Yorkshire Dales giving a warm, mellow, quintessentially English tone with classic good looks. It is an excellent instrument with very good musical qualities at an affordable price.
The Cavendish Classic Piano 112cm is the smallest Upright piano from the Cavendish series, yet possesses an astonishing richness of sound. Its size makes it not only a great sounding and playing piano but also an incredibly practical, and not to mention affordable piano! This is the antidote to the harsh tone which seems to characterise so many modern pianos. Lovingly hand-crafted this piano proudly continues the tradition of British pianos building
The Cavendish Classic Piano is designed to be compact enough to fit any room but with no hint of compromise in build quality. Most compact pianos still have a look of the 1970s about them with a ‘boxy’ appearance. Unlike them, the Cavendish Classic retains the shape of a traditional piano. Tapering front legs support the keybed and an upright top-board (not sloped) ensure not only is it pleasing on the eye but maximizes the internal area for the sound to vibrate giving a fuller tone. Cavendish have worked hard to deliver a high end, and quality sound, with the Cavendish Classic Piano’s treble sounding open and crystal without ever being harsh. The middle sings naturally and is classically European. Despite its modest dimensions, this piano possesses an astonishing richness of tone. The bass surprises by its warmth and fullness but, importantly, without drowning out the treble. The Cavendish Classic Piano’s dynamic range of this instrument is large and its reserve of power is very impressive.
Cavendish pays particular attention to the exact weighting of each key. Like all the processes of Cavendish piano building, this is done by hand in the Yorkshire Dales based factory. Unlike mass produced pianos, where an average key weight is calculated and all pianos are built in the same way, at Cavendish each individual key of the Contemporary 121 model is weighted for each individual piano. Thus the Cavendish contemporary Piano’s keyboard provides the best possible playing experience. “Every piano is different” says Cox “and this ideal is at the heart of every piano we build – each piano truly is unique.” The Cavendish Contemporary is British built to the highest standards without compromise. Perhaps that’s one reason why this model won the “Best Piano” category in the prestigious Music Industry Association’s awards.
Most mass produced piano make pedal actions from a variety of tubular metal and plastic parts. However, the shortcomings of such materials are various. For example, wear and tear on such parts can be high leading to failures after a small amount of years. Metal parts are “clunky” producing unwanted mechanical noise. Cavendish only use Native grown ash and oak and British-made cloths and felts for their pedal parts. These are the traditional materials that have lasted more than a hundred years in older pianos.
Cavendish is the only British piano maker remaining in the UK, founded by husband and wife duo Adam and Charlie Cox. After 15 years in Leeds as Headingley Pianos, Cavendish’s piano shop and manufacturing base is now located on the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire’s estate at Bolton Abbey. Subsequently, the Duke and Duchess are the patrons of the company. Cavendish Pianos are made in Britain using a wide range of world-class British materials for the highest quality pianos. The company are committed to make use of the wealth of expert piano-making skills that still exists in Britain today. Cavendish prides itself on its materials and their selection, their manufacturing accuracy and the human touch and craftsmanship that goes into a piano’s production. “The traditional English makers knew what they were doing” says Adam Cox at Cavendish. In addition, he goes on saying that: “For many reasons this seems the ‘natural’ dimensions for a piano and gives us the opportunity to create the mellow warm tone we require”.
Cavendish pianos use Renner Hammers, which are used on the world’s finest pianos and this Cavendish contemporary Piano is no different. The Cavendish contemporary Piano’s soundboard is German made, by Struntz dade from European high grade spruce, which is used on the world’s finest pianos. The case is cabinet-maker built in Yorkshire from solid walnut. The wood supplier, British Hardwoods, are based near the traditional cabinet making town of Thirsk, in the Yorkshire Dales. This is an entirely one-off process and thus, each piano has its own individual character. Of course, the process of selecting the wood and crafting it by hand is not suited to the modern, large assembly-line-based piano factory. For this reason, Cavendish are able to offer a truly unique product.
Another example of Cavendish’s use of premium British material is its cloth and felts. Manufactured by Hainsworth in Leeds, one of the oldest companies in the UK (established 1783), they’re of the finest quality. Hainsworth certainly know what they’re doing when it comes to textiles, their knowledge and heritage is legendary in the piano trade. The company have for a long time produced cloth and felt used in the manufacture of many German pianos such as Steinway. It’s no coincidence that one of the leading woollen mills should be in Leeds, famous throughout the world for its history of textile production.
